## What is Treblle?

Treblle is an API intelligence platform that sits alongside your existing stack and captures live API traffic, then builds monitoring, documentation, governance scoring and security insights from it. Data reaches it in one of two ways: an SDK inside the application (Node.js, Python, PHP, Java, .NET, Go, Ruby on Rails and others), or a plugin or policy on an API gateway (AWS API Gateway, Azure API Management, Kong Gateway, MuleSoft Anypoint, WSO2 API Manager, Traefik Proxy and Apigee). Treblle captures full request and response payloads rather than sampling, and masks sensitive fields before data leaves your server. Plans are tiered by number of APIs and request volume, from Core up to Growth and Enterprise, with self-hosted and customer-cloud deployment on the Enterprise plan; sign-up starts with a free account.

## Why use it in the API Lifecycle?

* **Request-level observability**: Every request and response is logged with method, path, headers, body, status, size and processing time, so you can debug a specific customer's failing call.
* **API governance scoring**: Rates OpenAPI specifications and live APIs against design standards, flags drift and integrates with CI/CD.
* **Auto-generated documentation**: Builds endpoint documentation from observed traffic.
* **Security checks**: OWASP-oriented checks, shadow endpoint detection and consumer fingerprinting on live traffic.
* **Gateway-level discovery**: Gateway integrations find and monitor every API routed through the gateway without changing application code.
* **Compliance reporting**: A per-request audit trail and dashboards for API health and risk.

## Best Practices

* Choose the gateway integration when you need coverage across many teams' APIs, and the SDK when you want richer application context for a single API.
* Review the default masked field list for your SDK and extend it with your own sensitive fields (tokens, account numbers, personal data). Defaults differ between SDKs, and a field called `auth_token` or `iban` will not be caught by a list built around `password` and `card_number`.
* Treat full-payload capture as a data processing decision. Agree retention and access with whoever owns privacy before enabling it on endpoints that carry personal data, and exclude endpoints that should never be logged.
* Use governance scoring in CI on the OpenAPI document, not only on live traffic, so a design problem is caught before it ships rather than after clients depend on it.
* Keep Treblle alongside distributed tracing rather than instead of it. Request-level API analytics answer "what did this consumer send and receive"; traces built on [`traceparent`](/headers/traceparent) and [OpenTelemetry](/specifications/opentelemetry) answer "where inside the system did the time go".
